Ant-Man Quantumania leads the box office by grossing $104 million

Sci-Fi May, 11, 2025

Ant-Man Quantumania has changed the destiny of the fifth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Walt Disney Company's "Quantumania" earned an additional $121.3 million abroad giving the pint-sized hero a $225 million global debut. Nonetheless. it is by far the world’s biggest launch of the year.

The fifth phase of the MCU is not gaining much popularity. However Marvel’s 31st movie titled Ant-Man Quantumania starring Paul Rudd as Ant-Man Evangeline Lilly as the Wasp and Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror has changed the whole course of MCU's fifth phase. The movie has a fresh rating of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes making it the only MCU picture with a rotten rating alongside "Eternals" (47%).

Nonetheless Ant-Man Quantumania earned a decent amount worldwide. However audiences were extremely unimpressed with "Quantumania" and awarded it a "B" CinemaScore. "Eternals" is the only other MCU picture with such a low CinemaScore. These kinds of ratings are indeed concerning for Marvel as it proceeds to roll out phase five of the MCU. These reviews are followed by mixed reviews for the comic-book franchise's post-"Avengers: Endgame" phase four.

Nonetheless people are rooting for Marvel to get its edge back. Good ratings or not theaters are hoping that "Quantumania" is a sign of things to come. It is kind of positive news after two long years of the pandemic that will bring people back to the theatres. Being the first highest-grossing film of the year Ant-man movies have indeed come a long way. Given the fact that the first "Ant-Man" film grossed $57.2 million domestically in 2015 the lowest start for any MCU film the success of “Quantuamania” deserve all the celebrations.

China was crucial for both the first and second movie of Ant-man outings. Each of the movies grossed more than $100 million there. However in recent years especially during the pandemic fewer American films have received major releases in China's tightly regulated market. A Disney release has not opened concurrently in the United States and China since "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019.

Nonetheless it remains to be seen whether China will ever return to pre-pandemic levels for American films. As we all know that there are several tensions going on in America over the Chinese balloon surveillance program. Still "Quantumania" grossed $19 million in China over the weekend.

There are other movies that are doing great in theatres even months after release. One such movie is "Avatar: The Way of Water" by James Cameron. It stayed in second place with $6.4 million in the tenth weekend of its release. Cameron's sci-fi sequel has now surpassed Cameron's own "Titanic" which is presently in theaters for its 25th anniversary as the third-highest-grossing film ever. It has earned almost $2.243 billion worldwide. Only "Avatar" and "Avengers: Endgame" from 2009 rate higher than "The Way of Water."

The other movie in the list of top 10 highest-grossing movies is "Magic Mike's Last Dance" in third place with $5.5 million. In two weeks the Channing Tatum movie has grossed $18.1 million. Universal's "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" which has been the top family choice in theaters since late December came in fourth place. With $5.3 million over the weekend it has a local total of $167 million and a global total of more than $400 million.

Against "Quantumania" only one new picture titled Marlowe was released in theaters. The movie starred Liam Neeson as Raymond Chandler's classic private investigator. It was released in 2281 theaters by Open Road and Briarcliff Entertainment. However "Marlowe" only received $1.9 million. Nonetheless it can be said that “Qunatuamania” is ruling the theatres and it would take a really good movie with an excellent screenplay and amazing storyline to compete with it.
