The celebrated writer Agatha Christie’s works got a new lifeline with the character of Miss Marple. Twelve writers collaborated to deliver on that note in the best way. They came up with their stories revolving around Miss Marple. Not just that, they also went a long way in rendering their unique touch to them. They did not distort the original.

English literature is brimming with a plethora of celebrated works. They go a long way in mirroring the interesting facets of human life. Not just that, they also span different themes and backgrounds to stand out in the domain. Taking on that, they go on to bring out the shades of poverty and agonies. Adding to that front, they also celebrate thrill and action narratives in the best way. One of these bright authors is Agatha Christie. She earned her name for her works.

Agatha cherished another pinnacle of fame with her short story “The Tuesday Night Club” in 1927. It celebrated the character Miss Jane Marple to a great extent. She is an elderly woman from a British village. She loved knitting and indulging in gossip. That went a long way in covering her wit and secret. She possessed the ability to crack crime thrillers.

To her surprise, Miss Marple competed with another of her famous character Hercule Poirot. Hercule Poirot is a scruplous Belgian detective. He featured in her work The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. That made her spring into the sphere of fame.

Miss Marple won hearts with her magic in 12 novels and 20 short stories. Her final appearance came in 1976’s Sleeping Murder. That year, Christie also breathed her last. However, that did not imply an end to her legacy.

Miss Marple is back in the light. Twelve authors have come together to pen down 12 stories revolving around Miss Marple. The list includes starry names like Val McDermid, Dreda Say Mitchell, Kate Mosse, Natalie Haynes, and Leigh Bardugo. Christie estate has given the much-needed sanction to these works. However, they had to follow a few guidelines to avoid distorting the background of the original one.

They had to set their stories in the same timeline as that Christie. Therefore, they had to refrain from coming up with new storylines and backgrounds. Therefore, they had to pick stories and themes from Christie’s works. They had to keep the legacy of the writer on with their works.

Not just that, they were also confronting the challenge of matching the magic of her prowess. Taking on that, Jean Kwok shared, “The greatest challenge was knowing that if I didn’t do this well, I would enrage many, many fans.” However, that does not mean that they have produced a perfect imitation of Christie’s work. They have gone ahead to add their unique touch to the plots in their works.

For Kwok, Christie’s works have been her childhood companions. They helped her to overcome the stress of poverty and immigration. Taking on her intention, she said, “I wanted to bring a modern sensibility to Miss Marple while staying respectful to the original character. For me, it was so meaningful to bring Miss Marple to Asia and have her doing Tai Chi and enjoying dim sum while she solves a series of murders in her classic manner.”

One can also trace the basis of Christie’s characters to her life. In 1926, her husband asked for a divorce. Reeling under the pain of separation, she left her home. Therefore, her success came as a change in the patriarchal roots of society.
