A Team Of Monks Won An Esports Tournament In Thailand

Gaming March, 14, 2025

A group of Buddhist monks studying at Balee Sathit Suska a school in the northeastern province of Thailand wanted to try their luck at an Esports tournament. An Esports tournament was being held at Khon Kaen University’s Nong Khai campus. The novices went to just try their luck and get an experience of a gaming tournament but came back winning it.

The monks had a course in computers and pursued it at their university. While studying their course they got to know about Esports and got entangled in the spell of mobile game. Due to this very reason they ended up competing in a mobile game Speed Drifters at the tournament.

School’s academic coordinator and head monk Kokkiad Chaisamchareonlap said that the monks wanted an opportunity to compete in a tournament and they decide to give them one. They thought that the group of monks can try their luck and get experience in a gaming tournament. Never had they dreamt of the monks winning the tournament.

The monks led a very simple life which included 20 hours a day of religion learning and the rest of the time was spent in indulging in normal educational pursuits and other duties as a monk. This made them rank outsiders and they had no chance of fighting in the tournament let alone win it.

The fact they wore their dharma robes while collecting their prize money became a reason many people were upset. But it did not affect the Buddhist monks they went up the stage collected their prize money had their photographs clicked and came back. They were very neutral about it and nothing to say about it.

Many complained to the school’s academic coordinator and head monk Chaisamchareonlap that the monks participating in such tournaments are not right. It does not send a good and right message to the rest of the world. But the head monk believed that every individual has the right to experience whatever he/she wants to experience especially when it is written in their destiny.

He said “the novices are just children like other people their age that need to grow develop their skills and explore their interests…. we wanted to give the students an opportunity. A lot of them don’t have that coming from poor families or broken homes.”
