Another massive DC Superhero film has been canceled

On Wednesday Warner Bros. Discovery made the shocking announcement that the upcoming Leslie Grace-starring Batgirl movie would be called off. The news was unexpected for both the cast and the crew with the product's overall quality cited as a contributing factor in the movie's postponement. Now Rolling Stone Australia reported that another DC movie Supergirl was also shelved.

Rumors suggest that the film's test screenings were not up to any sort of standard that would justify either the scheduled HBO Max distribution or the proposed theatrical release of the movie. The Batgirl was apparently put an end to due to the poor quality and an increasing budget.

Warner Bros. insiders have also stated that the Supergirl movie which was currently in production would also be scrapped. The movie was intended to be a spin-off of the upcoming Ezra Miller television series The Flash. The blue-suited character of the Supergirl would be presented in The Flash when the series premieres in 2023 with actress Sasha Calle playing the role. It should not be surprising that Supergirl is the next DC superhero project to be stalled by the newly competitive Warner Bros. Discovery regime and it was likely that it had nothing to do with Batgirl.

The Flash has been constantly criticized by the media because of its lead actor Ezra Miller. Warner Bros. said that the actor would no longer be a part of the DC franchise beyond The Flash since she had been linked to several criminal charges and allegations over the past years. As Miller was out of the scene it was reasonable to anticipate that any spin-offs with her lead role were likely to follow suit.

It was worth emphasizing that Michael Keaton's comeback to the role of Batman in The Flash was meant to be complemented by his appearance as the iconic character in Batgirl. It seemed that Warner Bros. Discovery would drastically change how they managed the DC film franchise which has recently been nothing short of a confusing mess.

Although the quality of the movies in the DCEU certainly depended on an individual’s personal preference there was no denying that franchise has been fragmented with Henry Cavill's Superman being benched long before Supergirl's probable cancellation was even considered and the Snyderverse dead in the water despite his repetitions of well-liked characters still having sequels and projects hitting theatres.

Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman and Jason Momoa's Aquaman continued and Batgirl was supposed to feature JK Simmons' Commissioner Gordon. In other versions of Gotham City several Batmen were running wild. The Batman with Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader would be released in 2022 and The Flash starring Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck as the world's best detective would be released in 2023. That meant that three Batman movies were planned to be released in less than 18 months.

The DC franchise of films needed a fresh start and it appeared like Warner Bros. Discovery's new management was ready to provide it. Although the Batgirl news devastated the movie's lead Leslie Grace and its two directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah it might be for the best if the movie was as bad as insiders claim. If Supergirl joins Batgirl in the Warner Bros leftovers
