Disney Is Turning The Splash Mountain Into A ‘Princess and The Frog’ Ride
The Splash Mountain is one of the most popular rides at the Disney themed parks. The popular log flume ride opened in 1989 at Disneyland and in 1992 at Walt Disney World. On June 24th Disney announced that the Splash Mountain would be transformed into The Princess and The Frog. Disney themed parks will be getting a major thematic overhaul. The Disney fans will be going down the bayou instead of plunging into the briar patch because the Splash Mountain will be transformed into The Princess and The Frog.
The Splash Mountain has thousands of fans because of its adventurous and thrilling five-story drop but with that there is brewing controversy with its characters and storyline. The storyline and the characters are based on a film from 1964 named ‘Song of the South’. Disney Executive Chairman Bob Iger called the film racist and felt that it was not appropriate for today’s world. The racist film was not released and was kept from the eyes of the public. The film did not even make it to Disney’s streaming service Disney+.
Though the Walt Disney Imaginers were working on the project since last year with the recent events the attraction to the project has increased. Disney was working on the project titled “New Adventures with Princess Tiana” and has put in a lot of hard work in it. The announcement was made at a significant time with the wake of the protests following the killing of George Floyd. The ‘Black Lives Matter’ was one of those protests that had everyone in it together against the administration that does not treat everyone equally.
It had great significance and impact on social media. The transformations and re-theming that are planned for the Disney themed parks will be happening both at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. News is Tokyo’s Disneyland’s version is also in for consideration for the upgrade. According to The Disney Parks Blogs the themed parks will pick up from the last scene of the movie. The transformations will be the next part of the final kiss. It follows Princess Tiana and her alligator friend Louis after the kiss as they are ready to attend their first-ever Mardi Gras concert.
In an interview with D23 Bob Weis the official Disney fan club Walt Disney Imagineering President explained why Imagineers chose “The Princess and the Frog” and its heroine Princess Tiana as the inspiration for the new ride. “Tiana is a modern courageous and empowered woman who pursues her dreams while never losing sight of what’s important.” He continued “So it’s a great story with a strong lead character set against the backdrop of New Orleans and the Louisiana bayou.”
The fans will get the last chance to ride The Splash Mountain before all the transformations will begin. Though the timeline of the project is still being evaluated considering the COVID situation.
