Elon Musk’s Starlink to strengthen internet reach in remote areas of the UK
Elon Musk has become a part of the initiative of taking the power of the internet in remote areas of the UK. His Starlink will provide on that note. The satellites will set the stage for the reach of high-speed internet to remote homes and companies. Taking on that note, it will test more than 3000 low Earth-orbit satellites.
Earth’s orbit is bristling with satellites. From the internet to weather forecasting, they are catering to different needs of humans. They ride on the power of science and technology to deliver the best on that note. Not just that, they are also adding to their narrative with iconic elements on the board. Many space agencies are trying to raise their stakes. Elon Musk’s Starlink is already a celebrated name in the domain. However, it takes it to another note with its recent initiative.
Starlink has been warranting its name to a great extent. It is shimmering like a star in its field with its achievements. It has etched its name among chartbusters. Taking on that part, it has made waves by successfully launching a plethora of satellites. Recently, it roped itself into the initiative of providing high-speed internet to remote homes and companies in the UK.
Delivering on that note, it will test more than 3000 low-Earth orbit satellites. That will go a long way in helping the network reach far-off places. Initially, it will roll out the trials in three remote locations. According to a source, these places are the 12th-Century Rievaulx Abbey in North York Moors National Park, Wasdale Head (in the Lake District), and Snowdonia National Park.
Well, it will not end here. After the trials, the government will look into the viability of technology. According to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport, these satellites can take their speed to 200 megabits a second. This is four times faster than the current internet speed.
Digital Secretary Michelle Donelan shared, “These trials aim to find a solution to the prohibitively high cost of rolling out cables to far-flung locations.”
The broadband waves by these satellites have been effective in taking the internet to places where copper cables could not make it. This has come as a great help to Ukraine. Musk continued the project in Ukraine even when it made a loss due to the Russian invasion.
Taking on that, he said, “Even though Starlink is still losing money and other companies are getting billions of taxpayer dollars, we'll just keep funding Ukraine government for free.” Therefore, it has come as no less than a blessing for Ukraine’s people and its military. It has helped them to stay connected in the ravaging war times.
This satellite advancement forms a part of the £5bn Project Gigabit initiative by the UK government. Making a mark, it will go a long way in helping the country strike off its places devoid of the internet. On the cost front, there is no clear information. There is no clarification about the payment that the government will make to Starlinks.
Presently, the figure stands at about £75 per month for ordinary customers. This is in addition to the £460 fee for the equipment. However, this decision of the UK government has also irked many people. There is confusion as to why did not it choose OneWeb (a British satellite broadband firm). The UK government had spent millions of pounds on it to save it from bankruptcy.
The government has tried to justify its decision in the name of technological availability.
