Final Fantasy Players Held Online Funeral For Gamer Killed By Coronavirus

Gaming July, 12, 2025

Final Fantasy is a Japanese science-fantasy media franchise created by Hironobu Sakaguchi and developed and owned by Square Enix (formerly Square). The franchise centers on a series of fantasy and science fantasy role-playing video games. The first game in the series was released in 1987. There are 15 main editions of the game, with the latest being released in 2016.

A number of online players of Final Fantasy have turned up in the game-world to pay tribute to a fellow gamer who died from the coronavirus after a virtual funeral procession was announced on Reddit. The deceased character, who was known in the video game as Ferne Le’roy, was obviously well-liked by everyone, as what looks like hundreds of other players turned out to make a solemn walk across the map of the game to honour them. After a chat started on Reddit, the group set off from the desert city of Ul’dah on the game’s Zalera server.

They were joined there by characters from another server – Coeur – where Ferne played as an alternative character called Poppy Rose. Fittingly, nearly the entire group was clad in black. They walked across the world of Final Fantasy in their funeral specific attire, and crossed through many different lands until the sun rose. They travelled through the forests of the Central Shroud, and they ended up underneath the Guardian Tree, which is a sacred site within those aforementioned forests. The journey lasted around 30 minutes overall. Then, after it was all over, the FF fandom took to Twitter to praise the gamers for their actions, and express their amazement at how many folks actually turned out.

One person said on this that the #FFXIV community never ceases to amaze them. Such a huge turnout and show of respect, community, and camaraderie at this memorial service. Another said that their view distance couldn’t handle so many people! And wished that may the fallen player rest in peace, and extended his condolences to all involved. Furthermore, he urged everyone to be safe. Another person wrote that this was their first time experiencing something like this. There were people attending that took up 2-3 zones of the base game which are large in general. So many showed up to give their condolences to their fellow adventurer, their friends and families.

The game has been in the market for quite a long time. They also have a whole load of spin-offs, metaseries, and films and television series. But as far as we’re aware, this is the first funeral procession the game has ever spawned.
