Horrified Dad Charged £5,000 Instead Of £5 For Daughter’s Game
This proliferated to the situation of an overdraft. Steve Cumming, 72, checked his bank account, only to assimilate the fact that he had spent several pounds for the app after allowing his 11-year-old daughter to use his debit card. Besides, Steve had also signed up for online banking services during the lockdown to avoid reaching the bank in order to withdraw money.
After he got to know that he had literally lost £3,500, he contacted HSBC to ask them to cancel his debit card. But instead of that, the attempt went in vain, and he was charged an additional amount of £1000 for the same purpose of in-app purchases, and it was paid to Roblox through Google Play. It started when his daughters told him about the game and all her friends who were playing it. She wanted to spend a bit on it as well, to which Steve allowed her to use his debit card on April 16.
He thought that it would be over after this one-time payment. He later added: “My daughter was really upset when we told her about the financial consequences. She thought she was playing with monopoly money – it didn’t seem real to her. How can these companies be allowed to trap minors in these games? To trap people who are vulnerable?”
Steve accepted his mistake of not reading the terms and conditions of the game properly before letting his daughter use his debit card. However, it is quite shocking for him to know that a simple game designed for children would cost him several thousand and that too, so quickly. Now, he urges the government to look forward to making changes in the law for these apps because he relies mostly on his pension. For him, it’s a huge amount that he has already paid.
Besides, he had kept it all for a holiday trip, soon after the lockdown. “I wanted to pay for my daughter to have a break. We can’t now, and I’m in my overdraft,” he said. Roblox came up to ask parents to review their payment settings on the third-party apps on Google Play, as they all have an option to require a password for each purchase, thereby preventing details from being used again.
HSBC commiserated for the massive loss that Steve Cumming is currently facing. The unprecedented situation has left him dilapidated. Meanwhile, HSBC has also received a claim regarding the dispute for the ongoing situation, and they’ll be looking forward to going into the depth of it. The incident will be examined as per the VISA dispute regulations.
Also, as per reports, Roblox has seen a hasty increase in its usage after the commencement of the lockdown. A significant 40% increase in the same shows that children are presently more riveted to Roblox than before the lockdown.
