Technology February, 05, 2025

Apple recently unveiled the new iPhone 14 series. iPhone 14 iPhone 14 Plus iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. But before you decide whether to buy an iPhone 14 you need to know what it has to offer. That's why we've put together this guide to the headline features of the iPhone 14.

Design

For the iPhone 14 Pro versions Apple did away with the notch in favor of what it calls the "Dynamic Island. Dynamic Island's design consists of a pill-shaped cutout and a circular cutout both of which hold the TrueDepth camera system. Apple combines the pill-shaped and circular cutouts into a single bigger pill that is 30% smaller than the notch. According to Apple the Ceramic Shield is created by injecting nano-ceramic crystals into a glass and optimizing it for clarity and hardness. The Ceramic Shield is designed to protect against scratches and ordinary wear and tear.

Colors

Apple came up with Midnight (black) Starlight (white-ish / silver) Product RED and completely new Blue and Purple hues for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. The Pro-branded devices on the other hand come in deeper more professional-looking hues such as Space Black Silver Gold and Deep Purple. This year's distinctive color appears to be purple. Apple is notorious for releasing a new hue with each edition of its flagship phones. This purple is significantly different from the purple on the iPhone 12 yet it looks just as thrilling and luxurious.

The Midnight hue was chosen by Apple for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. Midnight is a dark tint that resembles a deep black. This choice is suitable for individuals who desire a more conventional safe appearance.

Display

The improved OLED Super Retina XDR display on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max is flexible and stretches into the body of each handset. A 2000000:1 contrast ratio enables for blacker blacks and brighter whites and the display has a peak brightness of up to 2000 nits while outside making it easier to view in direct sunlight.

The typical maximum brightness is 1000 nits. HDR supports a peak brightness of 1600 nits and the display is substantially brighter than the iPhone 13 Pro display.

The 6.1-inch iPhone 13 Pro has a resolution of 2556 x 1179. It has a pixel density of 460 while the 6.7-inch iPhone 13 Pro Max has a resolution of 2796 x 1290 and a pixel density of 460.

Dynamic Island

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max variants do not have a notch. Apple modified the TrueDepth camera hardware putting the proximity sensor beneath the display. It has utilized smaller cutouts for the camera dot projector and other components.

While it is smaller than the notch it has the standard Face ID sensors and a front-facing camera making it large enough for a phone. As a result Apple turned the cutout into a notification center that displayed dynamic or interactive notifications.

Dynamic Island expands to display several types of notifications. Assume you're listening to music; the notice shows as a banner reaching out from the cutout while the Face ID unlocks animation is displayed as a square. It also displays the remaining battery life of your AirPods and Apple Watch.

Emergency SOS via satellite

Apple created custom antennas and equipment to allow the newest iPhones to connect to a satellite miles above the Earth's surface. This system is primarily intended for emergency use.

A user can activate Emergency SOS via satellite to send out a distress signal if they have a clear view of the sky or are beneath light vegetation. The gadget will guide the user through prompts to ensure that communication is brief yet thorough.

The user interface on the display will indicate to the user the direction to orient the iPhone to receive the best signal from the satellite. Messages sent this way can take anywhere between 15 seconds and several minutes to transmit.

Ports and battery life

Apple has preserved the Lightning port. Speculation claimed Apple may switch to a 30W fast charging speed but Apple has kept it at 20W.

Apple claims that the battery life has increased with the smaller 6.1-inch iPhone lasting 20 hours under typical conditions. The battery life on the iPhone 14 Plus may last up to 26 hours.

Both versions feature rapid charging which is officially rated at 20W. So connect the iPhone to a 20W charger for roughly 30 minutes to acquire a 50% charge.

Processor

Apple has kept the newest A16 Bionic processor for the iPhone 14 Pro series leaving the iPhone 14 with the A15 Bionic processor. This is not the same CPU as the iPhone 13 but rather the iPhone 13 Pro's version.

It boasts a 5-core GPU which allows for faster processing in specific programs and throughout the system. Because of this improved chipset the iPhone 14 now has access to the enhanced 4K Cinematic Mode.

The A16 received a single-core score of 1887 and a multi-core score of 5455 whereas the A15 received a single-core score of 1707 and a multi-core score of 4659. This is a 10.5 and 17.1 percent improvement respectively.

Camera

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max include an improved 48-megapixel Wide lens with second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization and a quad-pixel sensor. The lens has a focal length of 24mm and an aperture of f/1.78.

To save file sizes the quad-pixel sensor combines every four pixels into a single pixel equivalent to 2.44 m thereby converting the 48MP shot into a 12MP photo with remarkable quality and low-light performance due to the combined pixels allowing for 4x more light.

The quad-pixel sensor offers a new 2x Telephoto mode which employs the sensor's center of 12 megapixels for full-resolution photographs with no digital zoom.

Crash Detection

This new hardware includes a high dynamic range gyroscope and a dual-core accelerometer. It is capable of detecting G-force measurements of up to 256Gs. When combined with other iPhone sensors such as a barometer capable of detecting cabin pressure changes caused by deployed airbags it enables a Crash Detection feature.

When the passengers of a car are critically wounded or unable to reach their iPhone the iPhone 14 models may detect a major car collision and instantly summon emergency services. For accuracy Apple trained motion detection algorithms on over a million hours of real-world driving and crash record data.

Price and release date

The base model iPhone 14 will cost around $799 while the plus variant would cost somewhere around $899. They are available for pre-order from September 9 with iPhone 14 shipping starting from September 16 and the iPhone 14 plus shipping from October 7.
