On 35th Anniversary, The Creator Of Tetris Revealed That He Hasn’t Mastered The Game

Gaming July, 04, 2025

Introduced in 1984, Tetris has made a special place in the hearts of gamers. It was basically inspired by a puzzle called Pentominoes and it involved five wooden blocks. It was a game for two or three players and the aim was to be the last player to set down the piece.

That is how this game was inspired and the developer himself reveals that he has still not mastered the game, yet. The game was released on numerous platforms and the very first version was based on PC and that was the Game Boy Version. The latest version is on the PlayStation, hence, it is still deeply rooted in the gaming arena.

It is Tetris’ 35th birthday anniversary and when talked about the journey, Alexey said, “Well… Basically, I love them all. It’s really hard to distinguish them. They are all so different, but the version I played the most, and probably my favorite, would be the early Game Boy version.

He further added, “Well, it’s a Tchaikovsky dance from Nutcracker. I don’t mind to hear it from time to time. I do. I was the creator and I am the longest human being playing this game ever, you know? I have [had] a chance to compare all of them.”

He explained how he likes to play it and he said, “Tetris is a game for buttons. So, I like to play it on [the] computer with keys [that are] more comfortable. That’s why I think my favorite way to play is somewhere where I can hard drop and soft drop and navigate the pieces with a push [of] a button.”

He even agreed to the fact that he has suffered from the Tetris effect and he would dream of falling pieces. However, he loved the experience and it didn’t bother him to any extent.
When asked about how good he ‘s at the game, his answer was unexpected.

He said, “Well… No, I don’t think so. I’m good enough for an amateur because I did play a lot. But recently I didn’t practice enough, and professional players like Korean are really amazing with the game. I would position myself as, more or less, an advanced amateur.”
He even told that his favorite Tertromino was the J Tetromino.

The moral of the story is, “who cares?”
