Study Declares Zero Correlation Between Video Games And Violent Behavior
Not all heroes wear capes to woo you with their insane stunts. Some of them use calculators and wear a lab coat. Just like this group of researchers, for whom the entire gaming community is cheering for. They became heroes for all the electronic athletes out there, for actually calculating a zero correlation between gaming and being aggressive. The research group gathered data for more than 21,000 young people and brainstormed themselves to reach a conclusion that gaming has nothing to do with being aggressive.
Video games have become a soft target for parents to blame everything that their child does especially if it involves disobeying them. People believe that gaming promotes aggressionby featuring fights and guns. For the anti-gaming squad video games not just induce a competitive behavior in the young generation but also allow the display of controversial acts such as killing people. Just like our parents, President Donald Trump too, held video games accountable for promoting mass shootings. He blamed the games for glorifying violence and presenting the criminals as heroes.
A group of researchers, led by Aaron Drummond from New Zealand’s Massey University, performed a study using the method called meta-analysis on the available data from the previous studies. The idea was to confirm whether the accusations put on video games were true or not. The data that they collected belonged to 28 studies done individually by different research groups back in 2008. They performed their calculations on the bundled data which revealed only a minuscule positive correlation between gaming and aggression.
This study report was published in the journal Royal Society Open Science and clearly stated that it could not provide any evidence to take the parent’s side. And this wasn’t the only study conducted on the topic. Some of the studies showed a small positive correlation whereas, some even suggested that video gaming reduces aggression. And we guess we don’t need to tell you which one is the gamers’ favorite.
Some people still stood rock solid with their accusations and claimed that every single round of gaming leaves the player a bit more aggressive which one day blows off. However, the study did not support this argument at all. Another study as cited by Futurity tried to explain that the hostile behavior of the players is not due to the video game’s content but because of the frustration caused by a failure in the game.
Drummond and his team even studied the long term effects of gaming and still didn’t find any logical reasoning behind the video games being guilty of causing violence. The researchers in a statement invited more researchers and psychological professionals to contribute to what they had found.
And even though, this body of researchers has put in their heart and soul into the study to bring out the alleged fact in the best way possible, yet some still object to it. But anyhow, their efforts have for sure won the gamers’ heart.
