Voice Actor Explains Why The Sims’ Characters Speak Simlish

However, when you have the privilege to fill it up with your own imagination, you can make it as vibrant as you want it to be. Well, that’s what you get to see in The Sims game series.
The game emerged in the early 2000s and has become one of the most successful games of the present era. You can freely choose the characters in the game where you have the freedom to make it behave as it should in the real-world experience, but it’s just a game. Of all its qualities, there’s also a reason as to why it has bamboozled the game lovers so much. There have been several advancements since its first release, but there seems to be no change in one of its aspects. It’s actually the language because the creators of the game had a plethora of options to choose from. It could be English, Spanish, French, Mandarin, or anything else.
However, The Sims has its own language, Simlish, and most of us were so curious to know the reason for choosing a completely abstract language instead of something we all could easily relate to. But making their conversation tough to comprehend is actually the key here. It forms a blank space for each one of us where we can put our imagination to re-create our own ideas. KriziaBajos is one of the voice actors on the game who has explained the reason behind the Simlish language in her TikTok video.
And obviously, it’ll take you several hours to catch some of the repetitive words in the conversation. When people from every corner of the world are so interested in the game, they had to make it accessible for everyone. However, considering any of the known languages would make some of its fans alienated. So, it was better to divert the attention from the actual words and present a scenario that can be interpreted easily.
Actors ease off our work by helping us understand the emotions, tones, and emphasis on any situation because it’s all gibberish. The same description is also supported by the audio director of The Sims, RobiKauker. He described how serious creator Will Wright was when he insisted on not choosing any actual language, so everyone can imagine it in their own way. He added that they had been focusing on the gameplay all this while. The emotions were meant to be perceivable, but the meaningful words can also mess with the characters’ storytelling.
The game designer MituKhandaker said that the abstract idea lets you engage yourself in the game and prefer something that you like the most. “A face with two dots for eyes and a line for a mouth can be you, but the more detail you add, the more it begins to resemble somebody else,” she added. Moreover, Wright also thought that using actual language would make the lines repetitive and on the other hand, translating it all into multiple languages would be expensive too.
