Your Brain Has A Specific Region Dedicated To Your Favorite Pokémon

Science July, 05, 2025

We all have been in the world of Charmander, Squirtle, Jigglypuff and so many more. They had us gripped to the video games. We just got really influenced by the unique game they had to offer. We guess that’s the reason for it being the second best-selling video game franchise.

Pokémon has given us some memories that have made a spot in our minds and science has proved that the spot is permanent. All those who have played Pokémon know the tricks and are experts in all the attacks that are special to the particular pocket monster. Guess where you have stored all this information? They have been allotted a region in your brain. Isn’t that extraordinary?

The researchers discovered this spot after carrying out a test involving two groups of people. Obviously, one group had one who had Pokémon as a part of their lives since very long and the other set of people in this experiment were totally unaware of this universe containing such creatures.

The experiment involved studying the brain of all these participants. They watched the activity of their brains when they displayed the pictures of 150 original characters in front of them. The researchers even showed them images of normal day-to-day things including cars and animals. They made an interesting observation from the scans.

When the Pokémon trainers saw the photos of those creatures, the part of the brain known as the occipitotemporal sulcus got active. On the other hand, the other group of people who had never indulged in this world showed no signs of such activation in their brains on watching the Pokémon characters.

Pikachu has stolen quite a few hearts with its electric power and also, the cute gestures. The thought of these characters is activating our occipitotemporal sulcus. Now, there’s a term for our excitement around Pokémon!

The constant focus on this video game led to the formation of this region in the brains. We can tell that the parents are not happy with this addiction. However, this study shows no negative impact of the game on the minds of kids. So, parents can’t blame Pokémon (entirely!) for any changed behavior of their children.

The research has given rise to a positive result in brain development. It reveals the special ability of our brain to build areas that are specific to a particular thing we are engaged in while growing up. This is true for all the activities we have done as kids. For the Mario Kart experts, that region is devoted to Mario.

The researchers had already discovered this power of the brain when the grandmother cell came to be known. Okay, you might call it the “Jennifer Aniston neuron”. It is activated on the thought of a popular person and even when we see those famous faces.

So, the Pokémon study is quite helpful to know the working of the brain and how it develops as children grow up. If it is capable of storing those creatures, it can definitely have space for informational stuff that would be in favor of them and their parents.

Brains have secrets stored and the researchers are on the mission to reveal them gradually!
